1. Purpose
Pluripotent stem cells can differentiate into various cell types, such as nerve and pancreatic  cells upon appropriate induction, and thus, are strongly expected to contribute to the future advancement of the life and medical sciences. For instance, stem cells could be a useful tool for the assessment of drug effects and pharmacological test, be an experimental material on ontogeny, differentiation and disease mechanism, and also be beneficial to regenerative medicine.
However, there are a number of problems that must be answered to apply human stem cells to industrialization. We consider “a stable supply of quality-guaranteed, human stem cells on a massive scale” the key to success. To that end, efficient acquisition of stem cells, problems of tumorigenesis, quality control, and establishment of novel culture methods should be achieved. We need to understand the property of stem cells well and to settle “an index of quality evaluation of stem cells”.
On this project we have focused on mesenchymal stem cells, especially from synovial membrane, which possess high potential for proliferation and differentiation. We have been working on an invention of serum-free medium, which make the stem cells propagate in a large quantity (more than 1012 cells), development of the basic systems for cell culture and cell preservation, selection of undifferentiated markers.
