英文要約 Among aluminum alloys, the only material that is allowed to be applied to the liner materials, cap members, etc. of high pressure hydrogen gas compound containers is medium strength alloy 6061-T6. Among the five entities, namely, JARI, Ibaraki University, UACJ, Nippon Light Metal Company Ltd., SAMTEC Ltd., and Kobe Steel Ltd., we, Kobe Steel Ltd., take charge of the research and development of container-related aluminum members such as caps, and decided to analyze the possibility of reduction in weight and cost of containers due to the application of high strength 6000 series alloys. In fiscal 2013, we selected 6069 and 6066 alloy from among high strength 6000 series aluminum alloys. After homogenization heat treatment was applied to the DC ingots, common samples were made by hot forging and heat treatment (T6).

(1) The yield strength of 6069 is 378MPa with median chemical standard, and 382MPa with lower limit Cu. Both materials with median chemical and with lower limit Cu are high-strength material, having yield strength of about 12% and 13% higher than 6061-T6 respectively. Both materials have high IGC (intergranular corrosion) resistance to meet the technical requirements (The Japan Gas Association). However, they have generally low SCC (stress corrosion cracking) resistance.
(2) The yield strength of 6066 is 390MPa with median chemical standard. 6066 is a high-strength material having a yield strength of about 15% higher than 6061-T6, it has a significant extent of IGC, as well as high SCC susceptibility; therefore, it is estimated to be difficult to meet the general corrosion resistance specified in the technical requirements. To match 6066-T6 to the technical requirements, it is necessary to reduce the additive amount of Mg, Si and Cu to the lower limit of the standard for 6066, and to apply overaging treatment. .
(3) In fiscal 2014, we will continue to study on the IGC and SCC resistance of 6069-T6 and 6066-T6. We will select the alloy suitable for mouthpiece parts, using the properties such as tensile strength and general corrosion resistance, in addition to the embrittlement characteristic.
