This research aims to contribute to the safe and reliable of the hydrogen station, especially for lightning damage, by estimating the lightning risk to human or equipment and considering the effective protection against lightning damage. The results of this year are shown below; (1) Questionnaire survey regarding the lightning damage and the status of the lightning protection' implementation. As a result of the questionnaire to eight existing hydrogen stations; - There was no lightning damage at the moment. One of the reasons is thought that it hasn't been long since each hydrogen station was operated. - Almost all stations don’t have any protection against lightning. - Some comments say that they need appropriate guideline to refer relevant to lightning protection for hydrogen station. (2)Field investigation of existing hydrogen station. From the view point of lightning protection, there are some common problems in all hydrogen station as shown below; - Each earth electrode is separately-isolated installed. If there are lightning strikes near hydrogen station, the difference of voltage would occur between electrodes. The difference of voltage applies to equipment, and it would cause some damage. - Almost all station doesn’t take enough protection against lightning. Especially, frequency of occurrence of lightning surge induced by nearby-lightning is much higher than that of direct lightning, if there are lightning strikes near hydrogen station, some equipment would be damaged by lightning surge entering from cables such as power line and signal line laid outside of station. (3)Estimation of lightning risk to the hydrogen station. Number of direct lightning and lightning surge a year are calculated from the dimensions, regional characteristics and surrounding environment according to IEC standards IEC 62305-2 Risk management. Allowable number of direct lightning and lightning surge are calculated based on recommendations for loads on building regarding natural disasters such as earthquake, snow, wind considering the social impact. For example, damages with leakage of hydrogen or loss of control are defined as social impact: large and value of the allowable number would be set to be lower. (4)Consideration of experimental methods to clarify the lightning damage on the hydrogen station. In order to confirm the influence of direct lightning and lightning surge on hydrogen station, demonstrative experiment are going to be conducted at Tosu hydrogen station. Details would be discussed after field investigation and pre-measurement conducted next year.
