1. Research and development toward the utilization of lower-cost and/or higher-strength materials
1) Planning and preparation (JPEC)
To clarify the operating pressure and temperature of equipment used in hydrogen fueling station, needs and opinions from industries were surveyed.
- Revise the needs from industries on enhancing the usage of metal materials used in hydrogen refueling stations.
2) Evaluation tests and reviewing the results (KHK, Kyushu Univ., JPEC)
The project intended to expand the type and grade of materials which are eligible to be used for high-pressure hydrogen gas atmosphere in hydrogen refueling station and peripheral systems. This year, the followings were achieved:
- A series of data (e.g., slow strain rate tensile properties, fatigue life, fatigue crack growth and hydrogen diffusivity) was acquired on the high-strength austenitic stainless steel, XM19 (XRX19), and the Cr-Mo steel, JIS-SCM435.
- In order to enable Cr-Mo steels to be used in high-pressure hydrogen gas, novel concepts of design by rule and design by analysis were proposed.
- A series of basic studies was carried out on fatigue and fracture-toughness behaviors of austenitic stainless steels and Cr-Mo steels.
To survey the opportunity of using metal materials which show few or some hydrogen embrittlement in hydrogen refueling station, evaluating methods and evaluating indexes were discussed.
- Survey the record of usage of austenite stainless steels such as SUS316L in industrial hydrogen equipment and planning to enhance the usage condition.
- Continue the technical survey and discussion how to use low alloy carbon steels (Cr-Mo steels). Primary report might be issued in 2015 FY.
3) Proposal for the revision of Technical Standard (KHK,JPEC)
- Copper ally used under a condition, from -40C to 100C and equal or less than 25 MPa, was included in regulation in Apr. 2014.
- SUH660 high alloy steel used under a condition, from -45C to 50C and equal or less than 82 MPa, was included in regulation in Nov. 2014.

2. Development of database for the utilization of materials in higher pressure hydrogen over a wider range of temperature

2) Evaluation tests and reviewing the results (KHK, Kyushu Univ., JPEC)
Research and evaluation plan of metal materials used in ultra-high pressurized hydrogen at wide temperature range was discussed and Joint meeting was organized to co-operate with other research works in NEDO program.
- Make a consensus of requirements from industries on welding joint that used in in hydrogen refueling stations. As a result, XM-19 (HRX-19) was candidate as an appropriate material and will be evaluate.
3) Proposal for the revision of Technical Standard (KHK,JPEC)
- Available temperature and pressure range of High Ni equivalent SUS316 series austenitic stainless steel was enhanced, i.e. upper temperature limit: 85C to 250C, lower temperature limit: -40C to -45C, upper pressure limit: 70 to 82 MPa.
- Additionally technical document for special approval for cold worked SUS316 or SUS316L stainless steels was published by KHK in Nov. 2014(KHKTD5201).
