1. Description of the Model Project and the Outcome of this year: This model project aims at checking the cost performance of the bioethanol production which uses cassava pulp as a material in a pilot plant. Namely, in Thailand, the entrusted companies experimentally prove “techniques for the low-cost production of bioethanol developed in the Japan”. And, the entrusted companies and counter partner of Thailand cooperate to disseminate the techniques. In Thailand, consumed energy is increasing rapidly and the Thailand Government has encouraged the dissemination of alternative energy. The betterment in a production capacity of bioethanol and a reduction of both of the production costs and the emission of greenhouse gas in Thailand is achieved by the dissemination of these techniques should be expected. Since a certain amount of starch remains in cassava pulp and it may be supplied at a constant low price, it is promising as a bioethanol material. However, because the pulp contains much cellulose, there is no effective use measure. In this project, entrusted companies establish the bioethanol producing methods with the dry milling technique, and the simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) technique using thermotolerant yeast. Those techniques are developed by the entrusted companies. A pilot plant of this project will be constructed in the native starch manufacturing plant in Sakaeo province of Thailand. EBP Ethanol Co., Ltd. (EBP for short) is one of the starch companies, and is the Thailand side participating company of this project. Works of the project in the Heisei 23 fiscal year to the Heisei 27 fiscal years are; (1) A field survey and Contracts conclusion; (2) Facility and processes designs; (3) Facility building and exportation; (4) Installation and trial run; (5) Pilot demonstration; (6) Dissemination activities; (7) Design of commercial model; (8) Microbial strain maintenance management. Among these, a part of works related (5) Pilot demonstration; (6) Dissemination activities; (7) Design of commercial model; (8) Microbial strain maintenance management were implemented in the Heisei 26 fiscal year. The implemented contents are written down below.
(5)(6)(7): The entrusted companies had implemented the pilot demonstration throughout the Heisei 26 fiscal year. In the first half year, the entrusted companies had carried out the demonstrative test to adjust the suitable targeted value of finished fermented products. In the last half year, the entrusted companies had tried to decrease the reagent dose and utility usage which are used for ethanol production, and had accomplished to get the optimum conditions. The entrusted companies had begun design of a commercially available model plant by using the demonstrative test results.
(8): The entrusted companies had assessed the fermentation ability of the stocked microbial strain, and had ascertained it adequately available for this demonstration project.
