1.Island grid demonstration utilizing electric vehicles(EV)

Hitachi operated the demonstration system which controls EV charging hours based on the forecast electricity demand and excess wind generation. It is found that EV charging hours shifted from "peak" hours to "off peak" hours when excess wind generation is more likely. Hitachi has estimated the benefit of this renewable forecast-based load shift effect.

2.Smart grid demonstration in Kihei substation district

1) Evaluation of mitigating effects of frequency fluctuation by battery energy storage system Hitachi operated distributed hybrid battery system composed of a lead acid battery and a lithium-ion battery. Scheduled operations to more utilize excess wind generation and emergency operations to mitigate frequency fluctuation were tested. Scheduled operation tests resulted in estimation of its economic value and reduction of CO2 emission. In emergency operation tests, performance of the battery system was compared to that of the utility's existing generators classified as "Quick Starter".

2) Evaluation of effects of voltage stabilization and overload protection in distribution grid a. SmartPCS(Power Conditioning System) The units were installed at residences participating in the demonstration. They operated to stabilize voltage and current at the equipment and data of the distribution grid nearby shows that voltage and current in the distribution grid is also mitigated. Hitachi also modified SmartPCS control software to comply with the new ride-through standard set by the utility to cope with rapid solar interconnection.
b. Integrated DMS
Excess energy forecast performed by EMS-Plus is crucial for scheduled operation of distributed energy resources to more utilize renewables. Hitachi improved the operation to input EMS-Plus and verified that the forecast accuracy was also improved.

3) Evaluation of demand response effects Home gateways and load control switches were installed at 30 residences participating in the demonstration. Hitachi operated and evaluated direct load control system to perform demand response. Direct load control includes scheduled balancing operation to utilizing excess energy and to shave peak load and emergency balancing operation upon wind power down ramp.

3.Smart grid demonstration in low-voltage distribution grid

Hitachi installed additional micro-DMS units at transformers and controlled those both autonomously in each micro-DMS level and in tandem with integrated DMS in order to verify mitigating effects of overload and over-/under-voltage issues in low-voltage distribution grid.
