1) Outline and purpose: One of key factors to promote rechargeable battery systems in such as photovoltaic power plant is a reliable passive device to protect a battery system from short -circuit with high current and high temperature. A ceramic PTC thermistor has advantages compared with other protection devices . In order to obtain the lower resistivity and the higher breakdown voltage than conventional ceramic PTC , Maximum Technology Corp., collaborating with Tokyo Inst. of Technology, developed as follows:
2) Results: i) Specific resistivity and breakdown voltage : We obtained 2.2 ohm・cm and 112 V/mm, which are improved from previous 3 ohm・cm and 100 V/mm by using smaller particle Barium Titanate low material than our previous one with newly developed process conditions and composition, which contains Ba, Sr, Pb, Ca, Ti, Si, Mn, La. We are targeting 1.5 ohm・cm and 150 V/mm with including grain diameter control technology . PTC thin sheet: We obtained 38mm square 0.25mm thickness, improved by Doctor blade Method from previous 0.5mm thickness. The development will be continued to establish the volume production technology of sheeting by Doctor blade method and sintering flat . ii) Bench model capability to protect from excess high current : PTC functioned sufficiently under 30A current at 150 degree Celsius to protect a circuit by using 3 layers PTC sheets bound together with electrode. The development will be continued to establish the mass production technology of layering PTC sheets, targeting the capability to response under 140A current at 150 degree Celsius for protection. Iii) Business plan: We clarified the specification required by a photovoltaic power plant system manufacture for PTC protection devises. We also have started discussions with the potential customers of automotive demand for system protection PTC devices such as Electric Vehicle and Hybrid Vehicle . Ceramic PTC thermistor has the grate advantage for its characteristics to be able to change the switching temperature by adjusting the material composition .
