Research Item:
Development of nano-particle synthesis and technology for stable and high-volume production

In this fiscal year, studies on organic modified conditions of commercially-supplied yttria-stabilized zirconia(YSZ) were begun to synthesize highly-concentrated and highly-dispersive YSZ which is material for artificial tooth. In parallel with above study, we conducted studies on YSZ synthesis and in-situ modification by batch-wise supercritical hydrothermal treatment. Also we conducted zirconia synthesis and in-situ modification by continuous supercritical hydrothermal treatment.
Main research results are as follows.

1) Physical properties of commercially-supplied YSZ were estimated by XRD and EDX before studies on organic modification of these YSZ.
These were identified as cubic or tetragonal YSZ structure by XRD, and 3mol% yttria contents by EDX.

2) Zirconia was synthesized and organically modified by continuous supercritical hydrothermal treatment successfully. The diameter of this modified zirconia is only 5nm.

3) YSZ was synthesized and organically modified by batch-wise supercritical hydrothermal treatment. It was identified as cubic YSZ structure and 3mol% yttria contents. The diameter of this modified YSZ is less than 10nm.
