Abstract:
In order to achieve establishment of environment for co-designing innovative products based on regional property, innovative strategy of design and manufacturing of products with high added values and progress of development performance of local small companies for creating new products, this project aims at (1) construction of Tokyo Tech Design Factory as the core environment for development of innovative products, (2) development of assistive devices by design and manufacturing technologies for increasing delight in work and life, (3) construction of basic formation for innovation lead by local small companies based on high-level science and technology. As the goal of our activity, we will propose a sustainable and evolutionary system for developing innovative products, combined with marketing, business start-up and human resource development.
Our activity during the 1st year is summarized as follows.
Tokyo Tech Design Factory is composed of four sub laboratories: CoLab, ExpLab, FabLab and BizLab. The following activities were conducted for constructing these laboratories.
In CoLab, we held the Design Thinking Collaboration Workshop with the theme of "Designing the future flight experience". We had 20 participants of students and professionals and had great activities because of the great diversity in each team consisting of 4 people. As a result, we successfully had fruitful and productive discussions among participants and facilitators about how to use "Design Thinking" in real projects. Holding another workshops at Haneda Airport and using "Design Thinking" approach in developing new products in Ota-ku from now were discussed; additionally, at the airport terminal of Haneda Airport, we held two on-site ethnography sessions to investigate the potential needs of cart-robot and wearable power-assisting suit for heavy-loading labors. In the first session, we had 16 participants mainly for finding the needs of cart-robot. In the second session, we had 18 participants for finding the needs of both cart-robot and power-assisting suit. With the knowledge from these activities, we will make the first prototype of the cart-robot in this academic year, and decide the specifications of the next generation prototype and the research contents of the wearable power-assisting suit.
In ExpLab, two successive brain imaging studies using fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) were conducted to determine the brain areas involved in the “sense of agency”. This type of controlling sensation that the human user, not the machine system, have the initiative to control the entire system is believed to be critical to optimize the any kind of human-machine co-operation systems involving the artificial muscle system and robotic cart system developed in this project. Now data analysis is undergoing.
In BizLab, an open innovation workshop with companies across industries in group for transforming the tech-seeds into successful business was held hosted by KPMG AZSA. As the tech-seeds, cart robot and artificial muscle were concretely discussed. As a result, various problems relating to the performance, various technical challenges for commercialization, useful guidance in the project for promoting applications were obtained. These fruitful results will be considered in the research and development in the next year's projects on the cart robot and artificial muscle-wearable suit.
