 As a source of inspiration for producing new ideas or concepts instead of the traditional manufacturing concept, expectations on “biomimetics” and “bioinspiration” is increasing. However, successful cases are mostly limited to just material technology which imitates nature at microstructural level, and it’s rare that bio-inspired technologies are used for macrostructure design of machines. The adaptability and robustness in nature is very attractive even when designing machines at the macrostructural level.
 In this project, a new design technology called “Bio Innovative Design Technology” (BIDT) is developed, aiming at developing innovative design of mechanical structures and its industrial applications.
 Our proposed technology consists of the following three topics: The results obtained in this project are also descried as follows.
【Topic 1】: Construction of design database with form in biology
・Construction of database of bone and musculoskeletal models of animals (10 patterns completed)
・Mechanical modeling based on CT images taken from the bone specimen of giraffe (Almost completed)
・Construction of a finite element model of construction machine arm (10% completed)
【Topic 2】: Development of bio-inspired optimization and robust design optimization techniques
・Selection of optimization method through some benchmark problems (Almost completed)
・Development of optimal design support system with Microsoft Office Excel (10% completed)
・Collaborative research for sheet metal forming method is on simulation stage. (60% completed)   Verification using the experiment will be conducted next year.
【Topic 3】: Development of braiding production technology combining Topics 1 and 2
・Selection and introduction of braiding machine for carbon fiber (Completed)
・Test pieces are to be made in 2015 in the collaborative research.
Above three topics are integrated as design and production technology. Under Kanazawa University’s initiative, the regional industrial clusters are formed to establish big “supply chain collaboration system” based on Bio Innovative Design Technology (BIDT).
