Purpose:

Construction of road infrastructures peaked about 50 years ago in Japan, and they are currently decaying. Such infrastructures are increasing rapidly. In particular, degradation due to stress and salt is severe.
For maintenance, quantitative evaluation of the degradation is necessary. Conventional inspection method deeply depends on inspection engineers with specially trained skills. Although many crack detection technologies have been developed, their accuracy does not reach practical levels.
The budget and number of technicians are limited and still insufficient. The most important issue today is to develop reliable methods for managing infrastructure economically and efficiently. The demand for such development is significantly growing.
In this project, we are developing technologies for high-precision crack detection and management platform of inspection data. The purpose of this project is to establish inspection systems and inspection management methods by applying these technologies.

Progress:

(1)Development of automatic crack detection technology
We developed a method to extract locally valley-like image features. We applied it to an experimental automatic crack detection system. The detection accuracy was 62%.

(2)Collection and simulated cracking data
For evaluating the experimental system, we collected about 500 images of slabs and piers of bridges. We created a sample dataset for learning containing crack images and properties of crack position and width. Also, we created a specimen for acquiring image data under various conditions such as decay, stains and illuminations, and for reproducing the aging of the cracks which hardly occurs within the period of this project.

(3)Development and performance evaluation of the monitoring system
We developed a prototype monitoring system for managing various data (in-service period, environment, material etc.) related to road structure faults and decay and for generating the inspection report. We implemented registration, search and browsing functions on the system and tested with about 1,500 real data. We also implement the automatic crack detection function, and evaluated the system operability.
