Observation of current procedure of runway pavement inspection.
We visited Haneda airport and observed the current procedure of inspection.

Action Item 1 Development of GB-SAR

1.1 Feasibility study of setting of GB-SAR system at Haneda airport.
We observed the building sat Haneda airport and selected possible site for setting the GB-SAR system. Then we estimated the illuminated area by the GB-SAR.

1.2 Application of setting the electromagnetic transmission station to the Tohoku bureau of communication.

Action Item 2 Development of Array GPR

2.1 Evaluation test of array GPR system for pavement facility

We conducted the evaluation test of GPR systems at the Nobi Research facility of the Port and Airport Research Institute. In this facility, we used commercial GPR system ‘RAMAC GPR 250MHz, 500MHz and 800MHz) and the array GPR “Yakumo”. We could observe the stratified structure and damaged area inside the pavement clearly.

2.2 Numerical simulation of GPR image reconstruction

We expect that the damaged part of the pavement has a few mm thickness, and detecting small objects is not easy by conventional GPR. We are now developing advanced GPR signal processing, which can visualize small targets. Now we are testing a few approaches based on CA (Compressive Sensing), which ca overcome the limitation of Fourier Based image reconstruction, which has been used for GPR signal processing.
