(1) Development of a simplified system for monitoring the airport pavement surface
First, based on our experience in the engineering development of the image analysis of distress on a road pavement made of asphalt, we identified the specifications of measurement hardware suitable for this program and acquired the hardware.
Next, we conducted test shooting to develop the image analysis software for addressing the effects of distortion on lenses and illuminance. Before test shooting, we made a makeshift dolly for future use in on-site measurements. Based on the results of these tests, we prepared a plan for test shooting, which will be implemented by the next fiscal year and capture photos while running on the airstrip.
(2) Development of a system for discriminating the distress on an airport pavement

We developed an image analysis software that can integrate continuous images into a single image with a width of 4 m and length of 3 km. In addition, we set up the output data from the laser scanner to be synchronized with the GPS data. Then, we developed the graphical user interface with which the user can visualize the long images demonstrating the position and type of the distress.

We developed a prototype that automatically identifies cracks on the surface of the pavement by differentiating between the shape of a line shape and tortoiseshell. Moreover, we developed a function for automatically reducing the rooving from images and masking paint on the surface. By using these functions, we can identify the typical crack formed on the surface of the airport pavement.
(3) Development of the management software for the airport pavement
We developed a user interface for a monitoring system used for checking the distribution and the deterioration with the age of distress on pavement surfaces.
(4) Verification of the advancement of maintenance work

First, we visited the Tokyo International Airport to assess airstrips and taxiways and detected problems in the treatment of distress in the management of the airport, methodology of walk-around checks, agendas on work inspection, accuracy levels of inspection, and characteristics of inspections. Based on the result of these problems, we clearly defined the specifications and agendas for the instruments and systems used in this program.
Next, we collected and analyzed AMEDAS data assuming that these influence distress. In addition, we investigated the methods of measurement and analysis with respect to a road pavement made of asphalt. Furthermore, we are currently collecting and organizing the results of inspection, patrol, and construction.

We interviewed an airport administrator to collect the necessary information for refining maintenance work, designing the measurement system, and understanding their needs.
