1. Overall system and rotor development
Based on a 20 kW bench test, the specifications for the hydraulic generation unit were reviewed in collaboration with Sasebo Heavy Industries. External forces acting on tidal current generators were assessed for cases when tidal currents and wave simultaneously occur. The results showed that in the channels where waves are large, the external forces become extremely large.
In order to apply high efficiency wind power rotors to tidal current generation, water tank tests were conducted using 1/10 scale rotor models. Measurement of the power and drag coefficients for twin rotors showed that changing the angle between the rotors and current direction did not greatly reduce the performance. Water tank tests were also conducted with a 1/2 scale rotor, under no-load conditions smooth rotation began at extremely low current speed and it was confirmed that downstream turbulence was small. Simulations of a single rotor with a winglet design showed that the winglet improved the power and drag coefficients.
2. Tidal Current/Bottom Topography Investigation and Simulation
During April 2013, field measurements were conducted in the Naruseto and Takigaharaseto channels in the Goto Islands. Results showed that maximum current speed was 2 to 2.5 m/s in both the Naruseto and Takigaharaseto and that both channels would be candidates for installation of tidal current generators.
A numerical model capable of high precision simulation of the characteristics of tidal currents in Japan was developed to use in the design of our system and as a tool for selecting appropriate sites. The results showed that the Takigaharaseto had a maximum tidal current potential higher than 2.5 kW/m2.

3. Design and bench testing of hydraulic generating system
Based on the system concept for the hydraulic tidal current generation system with two sets of twin rotors equipped underwater nacelles, a 1/10 scale model unit was fabricated including the underwater nacelle structure, rotation axis water proof structure and supporting monopole structure to evaluate the total system. A bench test apparatus for the 20 kW hydraulic generation system was built and used for bench testing. The results showed that for independent driving with a single hydraulic motor, the generation efficiency (secondary conversion ratio) was about 80% which was better than expected. A 100 kW bench test apparatus was built for field use in the near future and reduction of amount of hydraulic oil necessary and the new oil cooling unit with seawater were introduced and the generation efficiency (secondary conversion ratio) will be measured in the next fiscal year using the bench test apparatus.
