We are aiming to establish a hybrid energy storage system having high power capacity and high durability composed of electric and hydrogen energy storage systems. This system is used for compensating fluctuating output power of solar and wind power generators and supplying electric power to loads as an emergency power supply system. In this R&D, especially, we are focusing on application of this system to water purification plant. We have been investigating about the R&D items as follows: (1) study on the need of water purification plants for the hybrid power storage system and the effective control method of this system in the water purification plants; (2) study on the suitable device for compensating short-term fluctuation output of solar power generators in the water purification plants; and (3) study on the constitution method, operation method, and control method of a model hybrid power storage system for verification test in the Moniwa water purification plant. In the issue of (1), we had a hearing with staff in the Moniwa water purification plant and obtained the need of water purification plants for this system as follows:
- CO2 reduction by promoting the introduction of lower-carbon equipment has been required in the facilities of city. Therefore, it is very important to get out of the dependence on fossil fuel by reducing the use of electric power generated by thermal power plants and increasing the use of renewable energy.
- It is an ideal that all electric power required in water purification plant can be supplied by only solar power generator installed in the water purification plan without receiving electric power from commercial power system of electric power company.
- For the time being, surplus electric power of solar power generator should be sold to the electric power company or stored in liquid hydrogen tank after converting the electric power to hydrogen gas and liquefying the hydrogen gas in a normal time. On the other hand, all electric power required in water purification plant should be supplied by only the solar power generator in an emergency.
- Since it was very difficult to secure fuel of emergency power supply system after occurrence of the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. Therefore, liquid hydrogen should be supplied by not tank lorry transport but liquefying hydrogen gas produced by electrolyzer.
- It is desirable that hydrogen system in the hybrid energy storage system can be also used as a hydrogen automobile station for fuel cell automobile used in water purification plant.
- Currently, the process of cleaning sand in sand filtration device for filtering water is performed during nighttime in order to reduce power consumption during the day and suppress the demand value from the commercial power supply to be a prescribed value or below. Therefore, it is desirable that the hybrid energy storage system enables the peak cut control which can suppress the peak value of power demand to a prescribed value or below.
