1. Changing structure for durability in actual field
Design work was continued in system which was confirmed validity by tank test etc. Static pressure acting on buoyancy chamber tank was increased, since position of the buoyancy was lowered for stabilizing posture of the power buoy. Then, a structure of the buoyancy chamber was changed from 1 chamber to 6 vessels to be compatible with pressure-resistance and lightweight.

2. Design work and fatigue analysis of power buoy
Preliminary design of power buoy of first edition had completed in April 2014. A fatigue analysis of power buoy was conducted using structure of the preliminary design and fluid dynamics data. And detail design work was continued at the same time and finished in June - July 2014. Based on the fatigue analysis there is no durability for period of demonstration. Since then MES and Ocean Power Technologies started to exchange views about acting force on power buoy and response of power buoy to the acting force.
As a result of the exchange, MES concluded in September that it is necessary a drastic change at structure of the power buoy. Although re-design was continued by the end of November, a widespread which needs reinforcement of structure and a necessity of changing a process of manufacturing were confirmed.

3.Countermeasures
Two countermeasures were introduced. One is a reduction of mean tension from 2.8MN to 2.0MN, estimate moment at lower spar. The other is changing structure at lower spar (removal of bolted joint, increasing skin thickness and etc.). As a result of these, life time of power buoy met a target life time at demonstration period.

On the other hand, dead weight of power buoy was increased by the reinforcement of structure. Once design work and manufacturing of power buoy were interrupted, economic efficiency of project using power buoy in the future is re-estimated based on the reinforced structure.
