The research and development project is to develop next generation
technologies for a wave energy converter. The converter is characterized by
the use of linear-driving type generator-motor, so the converter was named
shortly “Linear WEC”.

A-1 / Development of the next generation resonant control system.
Theoretical background and equation of motion for resonant operation of WEC
are sorted out. Power generation was simulated for the reference site of
wave farm, which is about two nautical miles off the top of Osaki-peninsula.
Wave conditions of the reference site was supplied by subtask A-3.
Basic configuration of the scale model for tank test was studied and the use
of off-the-shelf linear motor has been considered.

A-2 / Development of Linear WEC system.
Design guideline was considered for the scale model of a linear generator
which will be fabricated in 2017. The configuration is considered as a
generator/motor set which consists of one off-the-shelf linear machinery and
a transverse-flux type linear synchronus machinery developed by the
University of Tokyo.

A-3 / Oceanographic observation and analysis.
The candidate site to set a radar is being researched.

B-1 / Analysis by computer simulation.
Array effect was calculated for several floater shapes. The results showed
that the different motion depending on floater shape was observed at the
natural period of floater and shorter period. Thus evidently indicated the
possibility of enhancing the floater motion by tuning array effect variableswas.
