Coexistence of hot springs with geothermal power generation is one of the critical issues to be solved in Japan, where people had benefit from the hot springs from a long time ago. We have been developing a new remote monitoring system of water quality of the hot springs to scientifically interpret relation between hot springs and geothermal power generation.

In FY2014, we have made the following basic survey to catch up current status of the hot springs and monitoring related technologies:
(a) Survey of the situation of the utilization of hot springs. Information on the hot springs which includes quality of water and water supply system were collected from 22 hot springs mainly in northeast Japan.
(b) Survey of the industrial sensor for liquid. Information on commercially available sensors for flowrate, conductivity and temperature etc. were collected.
(c) Survey of microcomputers for industrial use.
(d) Survey of the telecommunication. Information on wired/mobile telecommunication services in Japan were collected.

Considering the collected information, we made conceptual and detailed design of the first prototype of the monitoring system. Laboratory test facility which simulates typical pipeline of the hot spring has been installed in FREA, AIST. The first prototype is now under manufacturing and will be available in June 2015 for the laboratory test.

Two meetings with external experts were held in this period for evaluation and comments for this project.
