Development of Geothermal Power Generation Technology
The innovative technology development for expanding introduction of geothermal power generation, development of removing scale technology for utilizing geothermal resources with low temperature effectively

Development content and its results
This project aims to develop an innovative apparatus of magnetic separator to remove scale forming elements dissolved in hot-spring water prior to its utilization, in which the design guideline for a magnetic filter to increase in size is clarified, and the silica as a major scale forming element in hot-spring water should be reduced to 150-200 ppm in concentration. This development makes it possible to treat hot-spring water speedy and economically without alteration in chemistry of hot-spring water except scale forming elements.
1) Market research
We conducted the market research in Shikoku and Kansai areas. Discharge temperatures of hot-spring waters are low on average except Wakayama prefecture in Kansai area. Intensive efforts for introduction of renewable energy in these areas are continued. For example, Yusuhara-town in Kochi prefecture is planning and promoting direct use of geothermal water with whole town. The use of the hot spring water for greenhouse or culture of fish is also planned as business in other towns.
2) A survey of hot spring water resources and chemical analyses of scale samples
Samples of waters and deposition materials in hot-springs with temperatures over 80 degree Celsius of the Hokkaido, Tohoku, Chubu and Kyushu districts were collected and geochemically investigated. Analysis of 106 hot-spring water samples indicated a maximum silica concentration of 484mg/L.
3) Magnetic field and magnetic filter design
The wire diameter of the magnetic filter was decided by calculation data of the last year.  Coarse floc separated by magnetic sedimentation device using the electromagnet, and the fine floc that passed through the magnet was separated by the high gradient magnetic separation with the permanent magnet, and a good separation result was obtained.
4) Magnetic separator of throughput 5t/h and running test
Inspecting the silica scale removal was purpose in this year and a magnetic separation device of the silica remover was built mainly. A field trial was conducted in Yufuin-town hot spring. The removal rate of SiO2 by magnetic separator reproduced data of a laboratory scale test, it was possible to get good results mostly as a magnetic separation. There are the problems such as the continuously operating of the system at the present stage, but the performance has progressed for practical use as a magnetic separation device of throughput 5t/h.
5) The value of the magnetic separation system for silica measures of geothermal water
Under the present conditions, the merit by the introduction of the scale removal device does not appear, but it was confirmed to be able to decrease the additive amount to 0.03-0.05% by using FeCl2 instead of PFS (Poly-ferric Sulfate) which was used in last year.
