We mainly conducted preliminary studies on development of a mechanical descaling method for geothermal scales.

(1) Evaluation of economical feasibility and economic ripple effects due to practical application of descaling method
 Considering "Don't stop hot water flow", evaluation of economical feasibility and economic ripple effects due to practical application of descaling method were conducted. Economical feasibility was confirmed by comparing the costs between conventional and proposed methods. (This part was conducted by Akita University, Kantsu Co. Ltd., Tohoku University and Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology)

(2) Study on relations among chemical compositions, structures and strengths of geothermal scales
We sampled geothermal hot water and scales at several sites. The sampled hot water and scales were investigated in a geochemical manner. The tensile strengths of the scales were measured using a material testing machine. The relations among the chemical compositions, structures and strengths of geothermal scales were investigated. (This part was conducted by Akita University, Kantsu Co. Ltd., Tohoku University and Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology)


(3) Developments of scale adhesion monitoring technique and evaluation method for scale removal timing
This task is aimed at development of a monitoring system which can measure the condition of scale adhesion before and after descaling in hot-spa water piping. In the first year of the task, we selected a testing site and prepared the apparatus. Obama onsen at Unzen-shi in Nagasaki pref. was chosen as the testing site. Test samples with sensors were installed in the piping at the testing site. Preliminary tests to check the sensor performance and flow observation in a test sample were also conducted. (This part was conducted by Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology)


(4) Developments of descaling equipments and evaluation method for descaling
Preliminary descaling equipments were developed, and were tested in the laboratory. The test site to evaluate the developed equipments was prepared. Small separator which will be installed at the test site was developed. Specifications of a large scale descaling equipment were considered. (This part was conducted by Akita University and Kantsu Co. Ltd.)


(5) Technical committee for project
Technical committee was installed, and first technical committee was held at Dec. 19, 2014. The plan document was discussed and approved. (This part was conducted by Akita University)
