(1)Development and testing of a power conditioner for small wind turbines (Tokyo University of Science)
I.Exploring the potential of standardization
It was established that by altering the parameter setup of DC-DC converters, it is possible to standardize Power Conditioners for use with various small wind turbines.
II.Data acquisition in the field
The planned data acquisition from existing sites could not be realized this year, but high-wind sites for both horizontal and vertical turbines were selected in Hokkaido for data acquisition to start next year. The Tokyo University of Science will also install turbines on its roof to analyze their behavior.
(2)Development and validation of an aeroelasticity model for small vertical axis wind turbines (Mie University)
I.Aeroelasticity model draft proposal
In order to reduce the cost of vertical axis wind turbines, an aeroelasticity model is being developed for reducing the safety factor at designing. As an aeroelasticity model of straight-bladed vertical axis wind turbine, a multiple streamtube theory and/or a panel method using lifting line theory are used in this research. A rough draft of two- and three- dimensional lifting-line models for straight-bladed vertical axis wind turbine were built during the year.
II.Consider specifications for a wind tunnel experimental model
The aeroelasticity model will be validated by a wind tunnel experiment of a scale model of straight-bladed vertical axis wind turbine next year. To create a universal aeroelasticity model using the wind tunnel experiment results, it is planned that the number of blades and the rotor diameter of the wind tunnel model can be changed. This year the specification and the measurement system of the experiment was developed.
(3)Establish an Input model for power conditioners for small wind turbines (The University of Tokyo
To establish a standardized Power conditioner tests, a power input model for horizontal and vertical wind turbines will be built. The model will be used to build data sets that will drive a power output simulator to test power conditioners.

(5)Component evaluation based on standardized specifications (National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology)
This year preparation of a design evaluation tool for small horizontal wind turbines was started. To evaluate specifications of small vertical wind turbines, 18 representative models were selected from turbines available world-wide, their specifications collected and analyzed. For design evaluation the IEC/JIS standards were selected and a simulation tool was built based on the Simple Load Model.
