We will develop of a compact methane fermentation system designed to enhance fermentation efficiency by utilizing hydrocyclone wastewater and starch residue as raw materials and combining organic matter condensation by means of membrane separation and molecular size reduction by use of hydrothermal solubilization technology. The system consists of the separation and condensation of hydrocyclone wastewater by use of submerged membrane, mixing with starch residue, molecular size reduction by hydrothermal treatment, and further condensation of the obtained liquid by using a multi-stage membrane system, and methane fermentation. (1) Development of submerged membrane separation system. For the purpose of developing a system for separating and condensing hydrocyclone wastewater by use of separation membrane, tests to investigate the properties of raw wastewater and condensation tests by use of filter paper simulating ceramic membrane were conducted, and small-scale on-site preliminary tests were also carried out. The average flux through the ceramic membrane turned out to be 0.48 m/d, and the system was designed and the elements, units and tanks were fabricated accordingly. In fiscal year 2012, validation tests will be conducted in September to November. (2) Development of hydrothermal solubilization system. In order to design and build a hydrothermal solubilization system capable of continuously solubilizing starch residue and condensed hydrocyclone wastewater, a principle validation test using a batch-type hydrothermal solubilization system, a study on heating methods and a work flow study were conducted. On the basis of the results thus obtained, specifications are determined, and the system is designed and built. In fiscal year 2012, validation tests will be carried out in September to November. (3) Development of multistage membrane separation system. Laboratory tests on membrane separation were carried out to select the best combination of organic membranes. In fiscal year 2012, specifications will be determined and the system built by mid-August, and validation tests will be conducted in September to November. (4) Development of compact methane fermentation system. In order to select a methane fermentation method, the properties of undiluted methane fermentation solutions formulated through membrane separation laboratory testing were analyzed. In fiscal year 2012, specifications will be determined and the system completed by mid-August, and validation tests will be conducted in September to November. (6) Field tests and related tasks. Preparation has been made for on-site validation tests to be conducted at the factory of Bihoro District Agricultural Product Processing Cooperative Federation. Mentioned above tasks, (1) and (3) were undertaken by Takenaka Civil Engineering and Construction Co., Ltd., (2) and (4) were carried out by Takenaka Corporation, (6) was executed both companies.
