1.R&D Background and Objectives
In Japan, although the dependence of coal-fired power generation is increasing, it has been a subject that there are many CO2 emissions. Although it is dealt with as the biomass being carbon-neutral and it is considered that greenhouse gas is not emitted by combustion, the amount used is not increasing due to low heat calorie density, low grindability, and low water resistance and stability.
With this enterprise, to overcome the faults of the biomass and increase the co-firing ratio in coal-fired power generation, torrefaction (TRF) technology is developed. By the burning test in an actual proof machine, co-firing ability is confirmed and establishment of production technology with domestic biomass is aimed.

2. Results
(1)Examination of torrefaction conditions for the design of an actual proof machine
In order to collect the data required for the design of an actual proof machine, we improved the paper sludge kiln at the old Komatsujima mill to the torrefaction demonstration unit. Sequentially we produced significant quantities of TRF fuels for the co-firing test at the Yatusiro mill. We produced approximately TRF bark pellets (60t) and TRF chips (12t). The TRF fuels show the water resistance and grindability close to the coal, and the bulk density and calorific value is increased. In order to use low cost bark, we studied cutting methods and achieved the production of TRF fuels without any problems of operatability.

(2)Evaluation of performance by co-firing examination in pulverized coal boiler
We confirmed that there is no problem with the safety and fuel properties prior to the actual combustion tests at the Yatusiro mill. We mixed the TRF fuels with the coal up to 20% from 3%, and investigated the grindability in one of three coal mills and the combustion in a pulverized coal boiler. We observed no operatability problems.
