This present study aims to investigate feasibility on methanation system from renewable hydrogen and CO2 as a solution for the problems which are;
1) Long distance between consuming region and suitable place of renewable energy,
2) Increasing in surplus energy generated by mismatch between supply and demand with increasing in renewable energy.

1. Feasibility study on total energy efficiency of the methanation systems
In order to simulate thermal and chemical behavior in the reactor, the data required for the simulation software CHEMKIN PRO and COMSOL MULTIPHISICS were obtained using bench scale test reactor filled with the metanation catalyst.
Since the simulation results well matched with the experimential data consisting of H2 conversion and heat recovery rates etc., they were used as design data for optimizing reactor which was planned in the pilot plant of methanation for the remote island.

2. Feasibility study of utilization of surplus energy of the wind power in the remote island model
In order to evaluate feasibility for the utilization of surplus power from the existing wind power in the remote island, three of process designs were considered, where the surplus power was calculated with using annual wind data and the power demand, total amount of hydrogen annually generated by the surplus energy was calculated and then three processes were examined for 3 types of utilizations.

3. Data Selection of the methanation systems in remote island
Based on the above process designed, the specifications of all facilities including methanation reactor required for processes were designed and reviewed.
A pre-operation test of the methanation reactor will be carried out in FY2015.

4. Meeting with IAE for review the feasibility of total system
To review the methanation system, the meetings were held twice in 2014 (July and December).
