FY2014Annual Report

To utilize the hydrogen for vehicles, flexible high-pressure hose is one of the key components that need to be developed for 82MPa high-pressure hydrogen supply system. Fiber-reinforced nylon11 was expected as a main material for the flexible high-pressure hose. However, we consider nylon11 layer can be damaged by the low physical property because of direct contact of hydrogen under low temperature in the range of 0 degrees C to -40 degrees C. We presume that we can prevent the damage in the hose by the improvement or the displacement of nylon and/or by placing the high hydrogen gas barrier layer at the inner layer of flexible high-pressure hose. Therefore, in 2014 we continuously worked on development of resin that can show good hydrogen resistance when 82MPa high-pressure hydrogen is charged into hose. The main content of the study is summarized as follows.

(1) Improvement of nylon
Last fiscal year, We confirmed the blister resistance was slightly improved according to the quantity of amide bond in nylon, and nylon6/66 was superior to nylon11 in respect of hydrogen resistance. And so we conducted the development of polymer alloy that consists of nylon6/66 and soft component whose brittle temperature is -70 degree C with reactive compatible agent using in order to make low-temperature characteristic better . As a result, we succeeded in development of new nylon6/66 that was superior to nylon11 in respect of blister resistance and elastic deformation at -40 degree C. The range of elastic deformation of new nylon6/66 at -40 degree C met the 10% target.
(2) Improvement of gas barrier resin
This time, we continuously worked on improvement of EVOH for the purpose of adding elastic deformation at -40 degree C, and we succeed in development of new EVOH consists of EVOH and multi soft component, which showed good elastic deformation at -40 degree C.
(3) Trial production of multilayer tube
We experimentally produced the multilayer tube consists of new nylon6/66 and new EVOH. We confirmed this multilayer tube showed good hydrogen durability and interlayer adhesion even after this multilayer tube was repeatedly exposed to 98.4MPa high-pressure hydrogen gas. We are going to work on proof test of the fiber reinforced resin hose for 82MPa high-pressure hydrogen hose for the next fiscal year.
