Entrustees: Osaka University, Shimadzu Corporation

1. Laser Diode Modules (Shimadzu Corporation)
 Red, blue and green diode laser modules with a high-power output from a multi-mode fiber with a core diameter of 200μm, and compact RGB-integrated laser modules (27×18×9mm3) with a low-power output from a single-mode fiber were developed for various applications.
 The high power blue laser modules have achieved the highest power level of 20W among commercially-available “a-fiber-coupled” visible lasers. The red and the green laser modules have achieved output power more than10W.

2. Feasibility analysis for each USE CASE (Osaka University)
First group
* USE CASE 1: Osaka University re-entrusted QD Laser, Inc. and Pioneer Corporation regarding the actual evaluation of USE CASE 1 (scanning laser-beam display) expected to have outstanding features of energy-saving, depth of focus (focus-free) and so on.
* USE CASE 2: Osaka University re-entrusted Panasonic Corporation regarding the actual evaluation of USE CASE 2 (high-brightness laser display) expected to have outstanding features of high-luminance, widest color gamut, energy-saving and so on.
* USE CASE 3: Osaka University re-entrusted IDEC Corporation regarding the actual evaluation of USE CASE 3 (laser lighting) expected to have outstanding features of high-luminance, energy-saving, design-flexibility and so on.

These companies already reported the results before February 27th, 2015.
Osaka University also lent one of the laser diode modules for each company for evaluating its fundamental characteristics.

Second group
The following additional set makers will report on similar evaluation by April 10th, 2015.
* USE CASE 1: Hitachi, Ltd.
* USE CASE 2: Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Seiko Epson Corporation
* USE CASE 3: Stanley Electric Co., Ltd

3. Standardization and consortium activity (Osaka University)
 Consortium of visible laser diode applications (http://vlda-cons.org) started up on October 1st, 2014. More than thirty-seven organizations have already joined.
  The consortium has a steering committee and the following three advisory committees.
(1) Laser device and module (LDM)
Mission: Standardizing laser devices and modules from viewpoints of safety and reliability
(2) Application solutions and guidelines (ASG)
Mission: Solution-providing for the USE CASE applications, and standardizing laser application products from viewpoints of safety, reliability and speckle-related matters
(3) New creative applications (NCA)
Mission: Finding new applications and markets in cooperation with creative persons/organizations outside of the laser industry
 
 The LDM and ASG committees are working on proposing their tentative guidelines. The NCA committee set up the consolidated meetings with experts outside the laser industry. Regarding the speckle-related matters, Osaka University re-entrusted Seiko Epson Corporation to provide a projector by April 30th, 2015, and will start evaluating projected images varying speckle contrast.
