We have tried to prepare fine particles of tantalum and zirconium carbonitride powder as precursors of oxide-based catalysts in order to improve the oxygen reduction activity. The use of fine oxide powder caused heat treatment temperature of carbonitridation lower, thereby we succeeded to obtain fine zirconium carbonitride powder of 130 nanometers. As a new trials except for the refinement of catalyst powder, we tried to develop Ta based catalyst powder added a carbon-13C to analyze the catalytically active sites using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). We clarified the relationship between additive amounts of carbon-13C and heat treatment temperature of carbonitriding, and consequently obtained carbonitride powder as a precursor. By the technological development this year, we provided both catalyst powders and precursor powders, and contributed to the promotion of our project.
