Biomass resources such as agricultural wastes or animal mature are widely spread to cause the high collection and transportation costs, so that large scale utilization of such biomass is hard to be established. To utilize the biomass development of a small scale plant with high economic efficiency is required.
A steam - hydrogenation hybrid gasification process which involves pyrolysis of biomass/wastes to produce tar, steam gasification of the tar with water gas shift reaction to produce hydrogen, hydrogenation of the tar to produce liquid fuel or raw materials, and incinerator for char produced by the pyrolysis was constructed and demonstrated in phase 1. To improve the hybrid process the following tasks were carried out in this year.
*Modification of the test plant
In order to reduce the construction costs and to enhance the maintainability three compartment internal circulating fluidized beds were modified into three column circulating fluidized beds with external loop seal. To prevent abnormal combustion in or after the combustor the hearth area and piping were reconsidered and modified. To improve tar recovery enlarged tar collector was replaced. The test plant to which all of the modification applied was demonstrated to be stable up to 40kg/hr in biomass feed. Tar recovery of 27% as carbon was achieved. The tar recovery was roughly corresponded to the design value.
*Evaluation of producing oil and definition of appropriate operation condition
To compare properties of produced hydrogenated liquid fuel, untreated pyrolytic products (heavy tar) and kerosene, evaporation lifetime measurements and observation of single drop combustion was carried out for those fuels. Hydrogenated liquid fuel had an appropriate properties for combustion in comparison to untreated heavy tar.
