1. Purpose
The purpose of this development is to save energy for a small fishing boat by 30% annually while achieving its better ride comfort, thus to contribute to the Japanese government policy.
2. Research and Development
We researched and developed a system of a small ship comprised of a cabin and floats in between of which there was suspension system. When the ship encounters waves, there arises a relative motion between the cabin and the float. Electric generators are placed to be driven by this relative motion so that they generate electricity and, at the same time, the relative motion is damped. A controller governs the generator to achieve maximum output keeping the ride comfort at a preferable level.
A scale model of a 1.6m length was manufactured and its towing tank test was taken place. The test results showed that by choosing proper parameters more that 150% of a wave energy absorption ratio was obtained, where the ratio is defined as a % of harvested electric power to wave power which entered into the float total width.
When we applied a skyhook control which utilizes the generator as a motor to apply a force to the relative motion at necessary phases of its rotation, the ride comfort was much improved under certain parameters and the cabin heave always stays within 50% of the wave amplitude and the cabin pitch always within 30% of the wave slope.
3. Market Evaluation
Through marketing we established a model of working conditions for small fishing boats. With this model,considering a fishing boat of a 8m length and applying the law of similarity, we calculated that the necessary energy consumption for a day as an average is 43.2kWh, while a today’s boat of the same type and the same length is 69.5kWh, which means the energy saving of this developing boat is 26.3kWh, equaling to 37.8%.
We cooperated with a ship builder, Nishi-F, to make a scheme drawing for a future product of this concept. After this drawing was completed, we asked fishing companies and fisheries cooperatives for comments on it. The major opinions from these users were that the working deck is high from the sea level and the fish tank is narrow if this boat is used for a fish-catching purpose, which would be solved in the next stage.
