ligno cellulose nanofibers and their applications for the structural members

Summary

The fundamental technology to improve the heat resistance of lignocellulose nanofibers and dispersibility of lignocellulose nanofibers in the matrix resins such as Polyamide 6 (PA6), polyacetal (POM) polypropylene (PP) has been developed in order to use cellulose nanofibers to reinforce automotive and housing plastic parts.
The project consists of three parts as follows: 1) development of the technology for the isolation of lignocellulose nanofibers from plant resources such as wood and bamboo; 2) development of the technology for the chemical modification of lignocellulose nanofibers suitable for PA6 and PP reinforcement; 3) development of the production process of lignocellulose nanofibers reinforced composites by chemical modification. In parallel, lignocellulose nanofibers reinforced plastic compounds were prepared to supply to automotive companies as well as housing company, who joined in this project as advisers and supplied their evaluations. The results were as follows.

1. The development of the technology for the isolation of lignocellulose nanofibers from wood was studied and the improvement of heat resistance was attained.
2. The development of the technology for the chemical modification of lignocellulose nanofibers suitable for PA6 and PP reinforcement was studied. The reinforcement using chemically modified 10wt% cellulose nanofibers was found to increase Young’s modulus and bending strength of PA6 by 2.5 times and 1.7 times, respectively.
3. The development of the production process of lignocellulose nanofibers reinforced composites with high lignin and hemicellulose content was studied. A combination of structural control of lignin and chemical modification of hemicellulose was studied and high Young’s modulus and low thermal expansion material was developed by compression molding.
4. The micro-foaming of chemically treated CNF reinforced PA6 and POM was tried using super critical N2 method.
