Developing an integrated manufacturing process to make chemicals from non-edible woody biomass, each member is acting vigorously as the R&D schedule. It is important to separate three main components, namely lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose effectively with keeping each activity. And also separated materials should be utilizable in the following process. Four technical groups were doing effective developments of each technical issue, components separation, lignin utilization, cellulose utilization, and utilization of dehydrated polysaccharides. These groups exchange information and samples to build up an integrated process.
(1)Separation group tried to improve alkaline pulping process for getting less condensed lignin and to improve condition of hydrothermal treatment to get soluble lignin more than 70% with water/acetone solution. An also cost improvement of the separation methods was conducted by each member for the selection. Several kinds of separated component were provided for other groups in order to evaluate them for developing their utilization processes. In order to select the most suitable method for integrated production, cost and application possibilities were evaluated.
(2)Lignin utilization group decreased lignin molecular weight or got phenolic monomer compounds with several methods. These modified lignin or fragments were tested as materials of phenol resin or high quality epoxy resin, and it was clarified lignin resin could be prepared as a substitute of phenol resin. And several monomers from lignin were used to establish the process for polymer synthesis and medicinal chemicals.
(3)Cellulose utilization group investigated about novel pretreatment methods to transform woody biomass to levulinic acid (LA) or hydroxymethylfulfural (HMF). As a result, LA was directly obtained in 79% yield (based on α-cellulose) from woody biomass with catalysts. Besides In the case of HMF, a process to make specialty polymer was developed and then a low cost production could be achieved in two phase reaction system with solid acid catalyst.
(4)Sugar utilization group developed the method to convert unbleached pulp and pre-extracted liquor which contained hemicellulose mostly, into monosaccharaides. The process could precede more than 85% conversion rate, and in 20yen/kg as an enzyme cost. Next, the conversion process to 2-deoxy-scyllo-inosose (DOI) was developed higher efficiency and also purification process was developed. In addition, ricinoleic acid was improved by fermentation process with transformed yeast. Production of isosorbide from C6 monosaccharaides was developed using the novel catalyst, and then the target yield in this year was obtained with solid acid as a catalyst.
