Project overview; In promoting the use of biomass energy, it is important to utilize livestock manure which is a wet biomass resource with good energy potential. Methane fermentation has been considered as a proper treatment of livestock manure in terms of waste disposal and energy use. However, the biogas generated per biomass input (hereinafter referred to as "gas generation rate") from livestock manure is lower than that from municipal solid waste such as food waste. Therefore, from an economic point of view, application of methane fermentation has been difficult for small and medium-sized farmers which accounts for many farmers in Japan. From these circumstances, in order to promote the use of methane fermentation as a means of livestock manure disposal, it is necessary to increase the biogas generation by enhancing the gas generation rate to improve the energy profit. In this project, we conduct a study on methods to increase the production of biogas by methane fermentation using unutilized biomass generated in the region mixed with livestock manure in view of technical and economic aspects. Another point to note is that a large amount of fermentation residue called digestive fluid is produced from methane fermentation. The digestive fluid is fast-acting liquid manure which contains high proportion of nitrogen and potassium. Therefore, to improve the economy of the project, we also conduct a study on the use and cost of the liquid manure to encourage the utilization of the resources.

The following research items were carried out; 1) Study on sourcing of biomass feedstock: We conducted a study of collectable cow manure, and investigated biomass (food processing waste, animal feed residues, and agricultural residues) in the region. 2) Study on energy conversion technology: a) We analyzed the properties of each biomass which is accessible and generated in the region. We also conducted a laboratory-scale test of methane fermentation. b) We investigated the pretreatment equipment for biomass in Japan and overseas. We also conducted a test on a pretreatment equipment of biomass owned by Ohara Corporation, and obtained actual data. c) We carried out a laboratory-scale continuous methane fermentation test by using mixed biomass (the pretreated materials and cow manure). 3) Study on energy use: We studied and investigated the biogas power generation and biogas selling as use of the generated biogas. 4) Feasibility study on commercialization: To develop utilization models of digestive fluid or small and medium-sized livestock farmers in the target area of this project, we investigated digestive fluid equipment and spraying situations in Japan and overseas.
