英文要約1. Examination of radar specifications and configuration of radars (Japan Weather Association, Hokkaido University)
Considering detection efficiency of birds and cost performance of the radar system, we determined the best specifications and configuration of a solid-state S-band and three solid-state X-band Doppler radars and ordered to a Radar maker (Japan Radio Company Co. Ltd.). We also setup four antenna basements at the site of observation on November of 2015.
Since these radars have new specifications, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications examined carefully the submitted application. Pre-permitted licenses were finally issued on February of 2016, and official licenses on March of 2016. We are remotely operating the radar system from Japan Weather Association (Tokyo) and Hokkaido University (Sapporo).

2. Identification of birds by using the radars (Hokkaido University)
As stated above, we have not yet obtained observed data. Therefore, we are testing newly developed program for tracking of birds (three-dimensional trajectory of birds) by using numerically simulated bird migration data.

3. Validation of three-dimensional trajectory of birds (Japan Weather Association, Hokkaido University)
GPS sensors were successfully attached to wild goose, duck and swan. Then, we tracked their flight routes in the S-band radar detection area (wide area), twice. We also visually identified and counted species of birds.

4. Steering committee, etc. (Japan Weather Association)
We held two working meetings of Environmental assessment study early implementation demonstration project/environmental assessment accelerate research and development business (bird observation technology development). 2nd meeting was held at Kurihara city, where the radar system was deployed. The committee members went to see how migratory birds flied from the nest to the prey field in the very early morning, and from prey field to the nest in the evening.
