1. Acquisition of DNA-markers relating to traits for biofuel production and its application to breeding
This research is aimed to select Eucalyptus elite clones solely for a biofuel production purpose in which the amount of accumulated cellulose per unit area becomes largest during the standard harvesting period. The DNA-marker assisted breeding technique will be developed and utilized at the stage of selecting plus trees among the seed-grown population in Eucalyptus plantations.
We constructed the data set of Eucalyptus clones selected in northern Brazil. The accuracy of the prediction is r=0.6 by combination of simple BLUP with term of population structure. In this fiscal year, by the prediction formula, we selected 31 candidate trees that are expected to have high growth performance and high cellulose contents, from 251 trees at the plantation site in northern Brazil. We prepared the seedling of the selected trees and planted them in the field.

2. Development of large-area soil evaluation system using a soil sensing technology
The purpose of this research is to develop a large-area soil evaluation system for Eucalyptus plantations. In particular, it is to develop a tractor-attached soil analyzing system for detecting underground Vis-NIR reflectance spectra. Verification test of the soil sensor is carried out in a field in Japan. Evaluation of the soil properties on the forest land in Brazil was carried out by the portable spectrophtotometer.
The tractor attached soil sensor was manufactured. In this fiscal year, we carried out the running tests of the soil sensor at the eucalyptus planted field in Japan (Tokushima prefecture). Also, the measurement by a portable spectrophtotometer was carried out in parallel. We selected the field that is expected to have large variation of the soil properties and geographical features in Brazil plantation. We began to measure the soil properties by the portable spectrophtotometer at the selected field.

3. Development of biomass volume evaluation system by terrestrial 3D laser scanner
This research is aimed to estimate biomass of branch and trunk in Eucalyptus plantation in northern Brazil. For the biomass estimation, we are carrying out data analysis, algorithm creation and software development of survey systems, with a terrestrial 3D laser scanner (3DLS) and a UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle).
In this fiscal year, to examine the optimal imaging method by UAV, we carried out the survey using UAV with a plurality of conditions in the plantations of northern Brazil. We acquired the picture data of the 3DLS and UAV in the same test area. These data were used development of the program for biomass measurement in large field. Further, we developed the software by using the program.
