In FY 2015, Mizuho Bank conducted a tentative cost-benefit analysis and brief survey related to a smart grid business model. Mizuho also promoted the dialogue and cooperation with local organizations, for the success of this demonstration project.

- Conducted Cash-flow analyses on EV Charging Business (ver.1: 20 units of EV Quick Charger / ver.2: 14 units of EV Quick Charger) and updated parameters related on EV Charging Business based on data gathered during demonstration project
- Conducted Preliminary quantification of the benefit from Virtual Power Plant (VPP) services to the local electricity system
< Outcome >
- According to the result of the cash-flow analysis of ver.1, under the situation of asset transfer at free of charge, maximum annual profit would be about 800,000USD at 100USD of monthly charging fee.
- According to the result of the cash-flow analysis of ver.2, under the situation of asset transfer at free of charge, maximum annual profits would be about 500,000USD at 100USD of monthly charging fee.
- According to the result of the sensitivity analysis, break-even point of both ver.1 and ver.2 analysis would be around 60USD of monthly charging fee.
- There are three types of benefit for VPP ー Capacity; Capital investment reduction due to postponement or reduction of additional firm generation capacity, Peak Shift; Reduction of the total cost of “fuel cost + variable cost + power purchase cost” during peak period, Ancillary Services; Reduction of the total cost of “fuel cost + variable cost” due to reserve shift from thermal power units to DR and changes in the unit operation status. According to preliminary calculation, Capacity benefit would be largest among three benefits.

< Outcome >
- EV Charging Business is critical infrastructure for Maui people. Therefore, certain local organization would be suitable to own EV charging assets. In this case, operation of those assets would be conducted by technical experts who are commissioned by local organization.
- The fees and incentives related to VPP services would be able to be set based on electricity retail prices and generation costs, or to be set based on ancillary service market clearing price in US Mainland. Additionally, they would be able to refer competitors’ fee and incentives.
