1.Details of the Research & Development (1)Background and Objectives:In 2014, the “Robot Revolution Realization Committee” has been established by Prime Minister Abe’s new initiative and “The Robot Revolution Initiative” which has been established as a nucleus of the “New Robot Strategy” is overseeing the “Robotic Innovation Working Group (hereinafter referred to as “WG”)”, and three “Sub Working Groups (hereinafter referred to as “”SWG”)” outlined as follows:SWG1: Platform Robots:The SWG1 will discuss and determine what kinds of platform robots will be able to correspond to various needs.SWG2:Safety Standards and Rules for Robot Utilization:The SWG2 is responsible for identifying the standards and rules for autonomous mobile robots that would be necessary for actual utilization in airports and daily life environments.SWG3: Robot Olympics (tentative name):The SWG3 is responsible for determining the domains of the competitions.We will facilitate the discussions of the SWGs to support the compilation of a comprehensive and extensive report.(2)Details of the Research and Development 1. Role of the Secretariat:In order to facilitate in-depth discussion among each of the SWGs in its monthly meeting(s) consisted by representatives of the industry and academia, the role of the secretariat includes the following tasks:Organizing and preparing for the meeting, such as scheduling, securing meeting venues, preparing meeting materials/ documents, develop minutes of the meeting, arranging for interpreters and translation of documents if necessary, adjustment of the member’s transportation fees, compiling the SWG’s report, etc.The “Robot Olympics (tentative name)” will be held in 2020 for various robots to compete and demonstrate its technologies, and an Advisory Board of the Executive Committee for the International Robot Competition has been established.In January 2016, an “Executive Committee for the International Robot Competition” had been held by nearly thirty experts and key figures in Japan to discuss the domains of the competition. Also, an “Advisory Board Meeting of the Executive Committee for the International Robot Competition” was held in February 2016 by ten expert members throughout the globe to discuss the purpose and details of the competition. 2.Conducting Interviews and Surveys:We conducted interviews and surveys on a global basis to experts and users of robotics in the European Robotics Forum 2016 to gain information regarding the robotics competitions held in Europe as well as interviews and surveys to gain insights to prepare for the robot competition in 2020. 3.Compilation of Public Information:We have also conducted a comprehensive research and summary on the following topics:1)The aim, effectiveness and issues/challenges of the platforms developed in the past,2)Major countries’ safety standards, policies and rules,3)The objectives, competition items, evaluation methods of the robot competitions that have been held until current, etc.
