For determination of functional requirements for a back-up flight control system for commercial airplanes, we have studied flight control systems of Airbus A340/330, A380 and Boeing B777 aircraft.
As a result of our study, we have concluded that aircraft flight control back-up system must have:
(1) Different data processing dissimilar from Primary Flight Control System (PFCS),
(2) Different sensor systems independent from PFCS,
(3) Functionalities of Direct Link, Pitch Damper, Yaw Damper, Variable Gain and Manual Pitch Trim for simple and stable flight control, and
(4) Self-diagnostic functions capable of reporting its status to other external equipment, such as Maintenance Computer.
With regard to Aircraft Motor Controller, a study of mounting method of power devices, circuit construction and mounting method of a hall sensor, signal-noise measures and wiring technique for high current has been made with a general-purpose motor controller. Now, evaluation of the general-purpose motor controller is being conducted to determine the most suitable control method for aircraft applications. As for Pitot Tube, pitot tube failures, heater assembly process and temperature control method have been examined. Since pitot tube failures are mostly attributable to either breaking of anti-icing heater or insulation failure of heater circuits, reliability of heater itself and assebly procedure of heater will determine the reliability of the pitot tube. We are developing a new pitot tube specific heater. We have obtained sample heaters for our upcoming durability testing. Also, validation of temperature control methods has been performed as an attempt to control temperature of the pitot tube.
