Sealing ability of O-rings and rubber material properties for high pressurized hydrogen have been studied in order to design seals and develop materials for seals in this research. In FY2015, we have researched sealing ability and failure of O-rings as a static radial / face seal at high pressure condition and measuring methods of hydrogen permeation for rubber materials in order to standardize the methods. The main researches in FY2015 are as follows:

(1) Research of sealing system for high pressurized hydrogen
(1-1) Research of rubber material for sealing of hydrogen
Both gas chromatography and differential pressure method enabled to measure the permeation parameters which are hydrogen solubility and diffusion in polymeric material. Permeation parameters of hydrogen in various rubber materials have been measured using these methods in order to clear the guideline of material design for sealing of hydrogen.
(1-2) Sealing ability and failure of O-ring as a static radial seal after cyclic pressure test
Sealing ability and failure of O-ring which has 1.9mm diameter as a static radial seal were evaluated at -40 oC after cyclic pressure test (gas: hydrogen, pressure: 90MPa, repeat count: 6600) in FY2015. Although small failure on O-ring surface due to extrusion was observed, leakage did not occur after the test. These results meant that sealing ability was maintained after cyclic pressure test. These results showed similar those due to O-ring with 3.3mm diameter.
(1-3) Sealing ability and failure of O-ring as a static face seal after cyclic pressure test
Sealing ability and failure of O-ring which has 3.3mm diameter as a static face seal were evaluated at -40 and 80 oC after cyclic pressure test (gas: hydrogen, pressure: 90MPa, repeat count: 6600) in FY2015. Compression ratio of O-ring was set to 10 and 35% and Surface roughness in the groove was adjusted at Ra 0.8, 1.6 and 6.4-m. Failure on O-ring surface was observed when the compression ratio was 10% at -40 and 80 oC. On the other hand, failure did not occur at 35% compression. The failure on O-ring surface depended on the surface roughness of the groove. Although failure on O-ring surface was observed, leakage did not occur after the test. These results meant that sealing ability was maintained after cyclic pressure test.

(2) Standardization of precise and repeatable measurement for permeation parameters
The precise and repeatable method of permeation parameters for hydrogen at room temperature was developed. The parameters were also measured at Kyushu Univ. to check the value with each other.
