With large amount of renewables connecting to the power grid, maintaining a reliable power grid to accommodate the renewables and the growing demand will be crucial. As a result of renewable penetration, the so called “Duck Curve” (rapid change of actual power demand in morning and evening which is calculated by deducting PV generation from the total power consumption) and power quality issue has been recognized as an important subject in California State (CA) in the United States. Based on AB2514, related public organizations have been discussing on energy storage systems of which the economic value can be further understood and optimized and be implemented into the Energy Storage Roadmap.

In the project, Redox Flow Battery (RFB) system will be connected at IOU (investor owned utilities) distribution circuit. The project has the following three main objectives: (1) To demonstrate RFB can act as a multiple-use battery. (2) To acquire know-how of RFB operation in cooperation with an IOU and Independent System Operator (ISO). (3) To utilize the data of this project to support regulations which improves economical value of energy storage.

In FY 2015, (1) project management, (2) agreement of related work, (3) procurement, manufacturing, and transportation, and (4) design for construction were conducted.

(1) Project management
Based on the demonstration plan, design for the whole system, manufacturing, and procurement were conducted. Sumitomo Electric U.S.A., Inc. (SEUSA) carried out procurement in U.S. SEUSA supported formulation of equipment specification. Innovation Core SEI (ICS) provided support services for these work.

(2) Agreement of related work
(i) Cooperation for concluding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) by NEDO was conducted.
(ii) SEUSA and the partner utility have concluded Implementation Document (ID).

(3) Procurement, manufacturing, and transportation
Battery cubicles were designed based on UL standards. The manufacturing of electrolyte has been completed and exported. It is scheduled to be transported at appropriate times depending on the status of progress of the construction. The manufacturing of all cell stacks, Battery Management System (BMS), tanks, heat exchangers, and pipes has been completed. They are scheduled to be exported at appropriate times. Power Conditioning System (PCS) is in the design stage.

(4) Design for construction
(i) The installation site has been determined. Basic design for civil and structural foundation has been completed.
(ii) After the schematic design for layout, secondary containment, etc., the design development has been completed. SEUSA and the partner utility formulated method of commissioning test.

On Oct. 27-28, 2015, U.S.-Japan Collaborative Smart Grid Project Workshop 2015 was held and ICS gave a presentation entitled “Distribution Grid Energy Storage Project for T&D Applications.”

Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. received 2015 Nikkei superior Products and Services Award for Redox Flow Battery System.
