Abstract:
In order to achieve establishment of environment for co-designing innovative products based on regional property, innovative strategy of design and manufacturing of products with high added values and progress of development performance of local small companies for creating new products, this project aims at (1) construction of Tokyo Tech Design Factory as the core environment for development of innovative products, (2) development of assistive devices by design and manufacturing technologies for increasing delight in work and life, (3) construction of basic formation for innovation led by local small companies based on high-level science and technology. As the goal of our activity, we will propose a sustainable and evolutionary system for developing innovative products, combined with marketing, business start-up and human resource development. Our activity during the 2nd year is summarized as follows.
Tokyo Tech Design Factory is composed of four sub laboratories: CoLab, ExpLab, FabLab and BizLab. Based on the results obtained in the last year, we used the four sub-laboratories in an integrated way for developing a cart robot as a delightful assistive product used in the Haneda Airport as a case study. The formation of the Tokyo Tech Design Factory was also used in the developments of a wearable power-assist suit for heavy-loading labors also used in the Haneda Airport and a standing-up assist device as other delightful assistive products. In order to clarify the concept of the Tokyo Tech Design Factory comparing it with other available facilities, a site visit to DMM.Make.Akihabara and a workshop with its manager and working staffs was held. The result will be used for improvement of the function and management style of the Tokyo Tech Design Factory. Through observation and user interview at the work sites at Heneda Airport, we tried to clarify real demands by the workers of logistics companies at the airport, especially focusing on the demands for cart-robots and wearable power-assist suits. Workshops to get feedbacks from the users were held at the airport with the assistance of the logistics companies.
In order to discuss the problems to be solved for commercializing these delightful assistive products, an open innovation workshop with companies across industries of 3rd parties was held. Prototypes of the cart-robot were repeatedly designed and manufactured based on the needs and feedbacks of the users working at the airport and the assessments obtained from the 3rd parties. Then, an improved prototype as the 3rd model has been designed and built which will be evaluated in the airport in the next year's project. In order to construct a model of user's delight during the use of assistive device, brain imaging studies using fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) were conducted. A non-invasive measurement strategy using a device which can give variable load to the subject under fMRI environment was developed and was used in our measurement. The measured data is being processed and the results will be applied to the design of the delightful assistive products under development in our project. User’s delight in the use of cart-robots was experimentally investigated using a tether-type mechanical interface. Its result was applied to the controller design of the prototype cart-robot for the airport, and smooth acceleration and less vibration less during stationary state were achieved.
