Cyber-attacks targeting IoT device is expected to grow with the foreseen explosive expansion of IoT devices. Currently many IoT devices do not have adequate security measures.
To address this problem, we will establish processes and guidelines; to easily evaluate the implementation of the security measure in the IoT device and confirm that the device is actually secure. Through this research and development effort, we intend to contribute to the promotion of secure IoT devices.
In this research we have focused on the random number technology, which is a critical security technology used in encryption and authentication algorithm. The following three research themes have been chosen for the year 2015 to 2017.
(1) We will study the entropy of the physical random number (seed value), which is input into the pseudo random number generator. This physical random number is the basis for the random number. The research will address the entropy of the Physical random number (seed value) which can be generated in the IoT devices, survey the entropy of the physical random number used in current IoT devices and derive an efficient way to measure the its entropy.
(2) Develop a test mode which checks the output of the physical number generator (seed value) and the pseudo random number generator to verify that the physical random number generator and the pseudo random number generator are correctly implemented in the IoT device.
(3) Develop a test tool which verifies that same random number generated in the test mode is generated under normal operation.
In this document which is the report for the first year of research and development, we report the results of the bibliographic survey of the research item (1) and the future strategy towards the evaluation of the safety of the random number generator used in security technology.
Our bibliographic survey summarizes the previous studies and estimates the amount of entropy obtained from IoT devices, and the needed conditions other than the amount of entropy for the future strategy of the evaluation of the safety of the random number generation.
