Sustained-load cracking test of SNCM439 steel was conducted in order to measure the incubation time for hydrogen induced cracking by using internal load cell. The test results revealed that the crack initiation pressure and incubation time decreased as applied K value increased.
In order to establish the effects of non-metallic inclusions, slow strain rate tensile tests (SSRT) in a hydrogen environment and fatigue tests in air were performed. Four materials of SNCM439 steel varying inclusion sizes and compositions were prepared. In the SSRT, all materials fracture after the stress-displacement curve reached its maximum tensile strength. The fatigue limit of material B including oxide inclusions was lower than other materials.
The draft version of the“GUIDELINE”on how to use low-alloy steels safely in highly pressurized hydrogen gas was made with JPEC and Kyushu University. The technical issues in the production were extracted.
