The purpose of this study is to develop a ground source heat pump (GSHP) potential map as a tool to support GSHP system design which takes into consideration the advection effects of groundwater flow for site selection. The study includes the following work packages: i) Research on geothermal heat utilization records and database compilation, ii) Construction of the 3D geological structured model, iii) Development of the multi-scaled integrated watershed models for national water and thermal circulation, iv) Technology development for evaluating GSHP potential and integrated informative system, and v) Validation of GSHP potential map.
i) Research on geothermal heat utilization records and database compilation
In this fiscal year, literature investigation to collect existing case studies on GSHP utilization as well as groundwater and meteorological information. Those data were then compiled / synthesized for database development. In addition, groundwater level and depth profiles of temperature were measured using existing observation wells in Nagano region where have only few data for model validation within the target regions.
ii) Construction of the 3D geological structured model
3D geological feature structured model of Kanto region had been developed since last fiscal year and Nagano Basin Model (NBM) was built additionally. The horizontal resolution of the NBM is about 50-250m, and the vertical resolution (depth direction) is 1m. Borehole data were basically used to construct the numerical models of the target regions. However, for regions which have only few or shallow borehole data, geological maps and cross sections were used instead.
iii) Development of the multi-scaled integrated watershed models for national water and thermal circulation
The development of Kanto-Tohoku regional model with horizontal resolution of less than 500m was started within the fiscal year of 2014, whereas, Kanto region model and Nagano basin model were developed at higher resolution during this fiscal year.
iv) Technology development for evaluating GSHP potential and integrated informative system
Using the simulation results from study iii), we have developed data processing procedure that enables us to map comprehensive GSHP potential data at different depths and to offer evaluated results to users quickly and efficiently. Specific GSHP potential mapping and test validation for Nagano basin model have started.
