1. Details of the Research and Development (1) Background and Objectives: The industrial machinery, represented by robots, is one of the key industries for Japan. In order to maintain and reinforce the global competitiveness in the field, pioneering to achieve a discontinuous innovation to refine the materials and element parts are essential. We shall work to realize innovation that cannot be achieved by the efforts of robot manufacturers alone, by focusing on cross-sectorial and cross-industrial approach on materials and elements which are advanced technologies that have been accumulated within Japan.(2) Overview of the Research and Development: Experts selected as members in the areas of “system (robots and industrial machinery)”, “element (mechanical parts, electronic components and functional parts)” and “material (materials, composite materials and functional device)” are to determine the needs for next generation robots and match them with necessary technologies, including research phase technologies and existing technologies to evaluate current technologies and identify the challenges/ issues for technological development. In order to resolve the identified challenges/ issues, they will then be further considered in detail for its technological development and a roadmap will be created so that key technologies with potential could be approached with greater focus. The following three players; “robot manufacturers” who expect robots to achieve results from R&D, the “key parts manufacturers” who expect their parts be used in the robots as well as “material providers” who expect their materials be used, will all work in one steering meeting group to conduct advanced discussions for the next generation robots to reveal the common issues within the industry.(3) Details for the Research and Development: We have conducted the following operations during FY2015. 1- Establishment of a Project Team for Research on Materials and Element Technologies: Selected members from the robot manufacturers, key parts manufacturer and material providers are brought together as a project team to work together by sharing common awareness towards issues. 2- Clarification and distinction of technological issues: To conduct a literature-based research to gather information on technological challenges to gain an integrated view of “system”, “element” and “materials” prior to the discussion among the project team.
