1.Laser Diode Modules (Shimadzu Corporation)
Based upon feedback from the evaluation results in FY 2014 by the companies working on the use cases, the RGB LD modules have been greatly upgraded in a practical manner.
The compact RGB-integrated laser module with a single-mode fiber output has been outstandingly downsized from 27×18×9mm3 to 10×10×5mm3 (approximately 1/10) for HMD applications. The usage of the 522nm-green LD instead of the 515nm one has contribute to widen the color gamut for HUD applications.
The high power RGB LD modules have achieved the highest power levels of 20W for B, 10W for G and R, with practical stability. The RGB combiner for coupling each of RGB outputs into one multi-mode fiber (MMF) has been newly developed. Particularly, the improved thermal performance of the R-module is a key technical factor for achieving the above stable 10W output. Fan noise has been also reduced for improving applicability

2.Feasibility analysis for each USE CASE (Osaka University)
For USE CASE 1 (scanning laser-beam display), USE CASE 2 (high-brightness laser display) and USE CASE 3 (laser lighting), the re-re-entrusted and additional co-operating set makers have evaluated and verified their priority items which they had already chosen in FY2014.
As a result, for all the priority/capability items, power consumption (energy-saving), color-reproducibility (+ color emphasis), ultra-small size, high-luminance, focus-free, and design freedom, they verified highly superb performance compared with the conventional light sources including LED.
Particularly for the HMD of QD laser (USE CASE 1) and Laser headlamp of Honda and Stanley (USE CASE 3), they are still working on with great efforts until 2016 June timeframe when their report will be issued.

3.Consortium activity for reliability, safety, standardization (Osaka University)
Consortium of visible laser diode applications (http://vlda-cons.org) has held a symposium on March 14th, 2016, and has published some of the guidelines. The fifty-three organizations have already joined this consortium, and the participant number keeps increasing.
The three committees under the consortium have fruitful results as below.
(1)Laser device and module (LDM)
The three guidelines of the specifications of LD, the reliability of LD and the specifications of LD modules are now available on the consortium website. The guideline of reliability of the LD module will be published after April.
(2)Application solutions and guidelines (ASG)
The guidelines of speckles, and safety will be published soon after April. The new task forces have been organized. They have already started supporting the international standardization of HMD (PWI for blank detail specifications of raster-scan retina-direct projection type has been approved in IEC TC110 WG10), and laser headlamps (under draft preparation for UNECE WP.29 GRE), and so on.
(3)New creative applications (NCA)
This committee has searched new applications and services through discussions with creative persons/organizations outside of the laser industry.

Osaka University re-entrusted Seiko Epson Corporation has developed a prototype of the projector for evaluating speckles on color image, combined with a speckle-controllable high power RGB LD module unit. This is re-designed based upon the evaluation results of FY2014. Osaka University has already confirmed the capability of speckled color image projection. Detailed evaluation of speckle on color image, by means of changing RGB speckle contrasts, will be carried out after April.
