(1) Standardization Activity
We have established the consortium on microwave semiconductor amplifiers under 188th Committee on Electromagnetics-Field-Excited Reaction Fields, in Jun. 2015. In the consortium, we have held the steering committee every month. We make a draft proposal of standardization including 6 items for semiconductor amplifier modules for microwave heating.
(2) Use case
Some chemical basic examinations were studied to select adequate chemical reaction to the microwave heating reactor with GaN amplifier modules, which can control microwave power distribution by controlling phase of microwave. We select the chemical reduction reaction with CrO2.
(3) Configuration of equipment
The microwave reactor with 8kW is designed and fabricated based on the results of small-type reactor fabricated in Aug. 2015. Three unit microwave reactors with five 500W GaN amplifier modules are connected in series, which realize about 8kW microwave power required in use case chemical reaction.
(4) Device technology
The final stage GaN amplifiers was designed and fabricated. Output power over 150W has been achieved. In the design of the amplifier, harmonic reflection circuits were employed to improve output power and efficiency. The GaN amplifier module was designed and fabricated, in which four developed GaN amplifiers are combined in parallel as the final stage amplifiers. In order to improve reliability, liquid cooling is used instead of air cooling based on results of the GaN amplifier modules fabricated in the 1st year of the project. The developed GaN amplifier module have realized over 500W output power. 15 modules were manufactured for the chemical reactor in use case.
(5) Design of a microwave heating reactor with semiconductor module
The microwave heating reactor with 8kW was electrically designed with electromagnetic analysis simulator. Some fixed beds of CrO2 used for the chemical reduction reaction are discretely located in the chemical heating reactor. In the design, it was confirmed that microwave power can be concentrated to the fixed beds of CrO2 by controlling phase of each microwave radiated from GaN amplifier modules. 2.6 times power density is obtained by phase control in simulation.
(6) Demonstration of a microwave heating small reactor with semiconductor module
It was confirmed that microwave power distribution can be controlled by phase control of microwaves with small-type reactor with semiconductor module. Temperature of the liquid such as water and ethylene-glycol, separately located in the reactor was measured before and after microwave radiation. As the result, 1.7 times temperature rise was obtained by phase control in measurement.
