Utilization of sensor systems has a large energy saving potential. However, trouble with the power supply including battery replacement or wiring between power and sensors prevents diffusion of sensor systems. Utilizing “Energy harvesting device (innovative electronic device)” enables sensors without outside power supply. Sensors without outside power supply facilitate promotion of sensor systems; contributes to the solution of social problems include energy-saving.
This project reviews three use-cases; 1. Energy saving promotion at offices and factories, 2. Loss reduction by fault prediction of rotating machineries, and 3. Fuel efficiency improvement by applying tire pressure monitoring system.
With these use-cases, long-term stable operation of sensor system applying energy harvesting device has been validated. Basic data collection, implementation guideline formation, international standardization proposal, etc. for environmental power generation device will be proceeded for promotion.

The projects includes following three phases;

a. Creation of use-cases
b. Implementation and validation, and
c. Efforts for standardization, safety and reliability.

a. Creation of use-cases

Interviews to potential user and specification consideration on the sensor system utilizing “environmental power generation device” which enables sensor without outside power supply have been conducted in above three use-cases. Product and service are being modeled on the interview and specification; the business plan and framework will be considered.

b. Implementation and validation

For the use-case 1. and 2., an office , a factory and a server room were selected for validation; their power generation environments have been measured. An independent power generation module which includes energy harvesting device, power management circuit and storage device has been prepared corresponding to wireless sensor’s electricity consumption. Wireless sensor products with independent power generation modules have been validated for long-term stable use.
For the use-case 3., Electric generating capability of energy harvesting device and intermittent operation of wireless communication have been validated using collected data in vibration/shock measurement environment.

c. Efforts for safety, reliability and standardization.

The experts committee has examined standard testing method for vibration energy harvester; has considered methods for random excitation test and impact test; and has tested several vibration energy harvesting devices. A measurement guideline and a proposal for international standardization are in process of creating.
