Blast furnace slag sand sometimes forms a lump of sand during storage because it has a hydraulic setting property. When concrete is mixed with a lump of sand and precast prestressed concrete members are produced, it may cause adverse effect on products. In order to solve this problem useful information is collected from experts of blast furnace slag segregate producing companies. Improvement measures were planned for existing storage facilities in a precast prestressed concrete members producing factory.
In order to produce precast prestressed concrete members in a conventional precast concrete members producing factory with same process and schedule using blast furnace slag sand concrete, concrete has to have required basic performance, such as slump of fresh concrete and early compressive strength of hardened concrete. Required basic performance for slump of fresh concrete is around between 8cm to 12cm and for compressive strength of hardened concrete is more than 35 N/mm2 at age 18 hours including steam accelerated curing. From results of compressive strength tests of concrete using blast furnace slag, it has been decided that the basic water cement ratio is 35%. Then trial mixings were performed and fresh concrete properties were examined to establish a basic mix proportion. Two kinds of blast furnace slag sand were used in trial mixings, one is produced in Mizusihma and the other is produced in Tsurumi. The satisfactory fresh properties such as slump of concrete were able to be obtained by adjusting dosage of high-performance AE water reducing agent for both blast furnace slag sand. The basic mix proportions for producing precast prestressed concrete members in a precast concrete factory were established.
