This research and development aims to reduce the installation cost and operating cost of overall geothermal heat pump systems by achieving a high-efficiency heat exchange system in which thermal energy contained in groundwater is fed into a closed-loop horizontal geothermal energy extraction system that is buried near the surface of the ground.
In FY2014, research and development was carried out to establish this system, and then a demonstration plant (with a capacity of 20kW) was constructed. A trial run was conducted in March 2015.
The demonstration plant is located between the Sai and Chikuma Rivers, in an area with abundant groundwater, which is used by local people for domestic purposes. If the quality of the groundwater is diminished due to a problem with the antifreeze solution used as circulating fluid in the geothermal extraction system, it is likely to have a greater impact than it would in other areas. In light of this, we have decided to use fresh water in place of the antifreeze solution for the circulating fluid in the geothermal extraction system, thereby improving the demonstration plant based on the results of the trial run so that the system can be operated safely in areas with abundant groundwater.
There were two problems to be solved to improve the demonstration plant: (i) freezing of the circulating fresh water and (ii) scaling and rusting in the pipes and heat exchanger. The system structure was reviewed to develop countermeasures for each of these problems.
