Developing an integrated manufacturing process to make chemicals from non-edible woody biomass, each member is acting vigorously as the R&D schedule. It is important to utilize the separated three main components effectively. Four technical groups were conducting the effective developments of each technical issue, low material, lignin utilization, cellulose utilization, and utilization of dehydrated polysaccharides. These groups exchange information and samples to build up an integrated process.
(1) Low material group tried to improve the economic situation of separation process and to make the each component easier to utilize in the following groups. The important product to conduct the integrated process is lignin, however the soda-AQ lignin from the selected process is not good to utilize for chemicals. Then special taskforces started to decrease the lignin molecular weight by chemical methods. Oxidative cleavages of lignin were observed, but it was not enough to improve the character for chemical utilization.
(2) Lignin utilization group found out a way to utilize whole lignin for phenolic resin. Due to the character of soda-lignin, it was observed that effective content of lignin for Novolak type lignin resin was around 30%. Epoxy resin with lignin was obtained after checking the condition of temperature, solvents, and catalysts. And also urethane resin with lignin was made for the evaluation of special character of lignin molecule.
(3) Cellulose utilization group investigated about novel pretreatment methods to transform woody biomass to levulinic acid (LA). To blush up the process condition from cellulose to LA, the life time of catalyst was extended. Then the process became effective for industrial scale up.
(4) The cellulose samples from soda-cooking process were hydrolyzed with enzymes. To obtain oligosaccharides, new enzymes were developed. And then the process to separate oligosaccharides from monosaccharaides was established. The isolated oligosaccharides had negative effects for toxicity tests. These oligosaccharides can make this integrated process profitable because of high market prices.
